Don’t Just Say Yes — Get Your Calendar Out

“We have to get together for coffee soon.”

“Let’s totally have drinks!”

“I would love to go for lunch—I never see you!”

“It’s been way too long, I miss your face. Plans?”

These are actual things I have said, on more than one occasion, to more than one person.

And here’s the thing. I have every intention in the world of grabbing that coffee, drinking those drinks, having that lunch and making those plans. Every intention. But then, you know, everything else in my life happens. Someone isn’t feeling well, someone needs help studying, someone needs a ride somewhere, and, well, let’s be honest here…someone is way too tired at the end of the day and just wants to crawl into her bed with a tea and some flannel jammies and her remote.

That last someone is me, if you couldn’t already tell.

In the last few weeks, though, I did two things. Thing #1: I went for dinner with a friend. Thing #2: I went for a morning coffee with a friend. And you know what? I am still smiling.

It’s no secret, I’m busy. You know, just like every other person I know. We are all different, sure, but I can guarantee that we all have some combination of kids and jobs and husbands and mortgages and commitments and sickness and laundry and stress and photoshoots and meetings and cars that need fixing and roofs that need replacing and things. We are all busy during the day and tired at the end of the it.

But you know what? These little moments — the coffee and drinks and dinners and nights out — are so very important. And I think we forget this. No, I know we forget this. Sometimes it’s okay to tell your kids (and spouse) that you are going out. Sometimes it’s okay to put down that paperwork for a coffee. Sometimes your remote and your DVR can wait. Sometimes you just need to be a little selfish and take care of you.

So the next time your friend tells you that you must get together for coffee soon, your answer should not be, “oh yes, definitely, let’s do that.”

Instead, your answer should be, “Yes! Take out your calendar and let’s schedule something rightthisveryminute!”

You’ll smile, I guarantee it.
